Bhd. menjadi satu lagi produk dalam industri pelancongan di Negeri Sembilan.

Udara segar

AS Equestrian yang mendapat pengiktirafan Majlis Ekuin Malaysia menyediakan kemudahan kelas menunggang kuda, khidmat penjagaan kuda dan pelbagai aktiviti berkaitan kuda, kata Pengarah Urusan AS Resources Services Sdn.

AS Equestrian dibuka sejak enam bulan lalu dengan pelaburan sebanyak RM50,000.

AS Equestrian menawarkan pakej menunggang kuda. Setakat ini sambutan sungguh menggalakkan kerana ramai pengunjung tertarik dengan AS Equestrian yang dibuka pada hari Selasa hingga Ahad. - Bernama

Why are horses traditionally mounted from the left side?

Traditionally, people mount a horse from the left side (although today, we train them to accept someone getting on them from both sides). I was always told that this was because knights used to wear their swords on their right leg, which they then had to keep straight when mounting. Thus, they bent their left leg into the stirrup and were able to swing their right leg over straight. However, recently I have noticed that whenever I see knights depicted in paintings or movies, the sword is typically on the left side. Can you help me figure this one out? What is the straight dope on why people traditionally mount horses on the left side?

— Heather Hipp, Atlanta, GA

We'd better begin by acknowledging the obvious, Heather. The fact is that most people don't mount a horse from the left side. Most people call a cab. Those having some acquaintance with horsemanship, however, know that the left side is the horse's "near" side while the right side is the "off" side. This is often explained in terms of swords, but we're then obliged to acknowledge obvious fact #2: While a fair number of people still ride horses, you're living in one tough neighborhood if you need to do so while wearing a sword.

About those swords. I'm afraid you've gotten the explanation a little scrambled. As you've observed, swords are traditionally worn on the left, since that makes it easier for a right-handed swordsman to pull the sword from its scabbard. If you're wearing a sword on the left, you'll want to mount your horse on its left, since otherwise the sword will get in the way. The practice goes way back before the medieval heyday of knights. In fact, it most likely originated when sword-toting warriors first began riding horses into battle.

The ancient Greek general Xenophon (c.430-c.355 B.C.), in his treatise The Art of Horsemanship, gives a step-by-step description--literally--of mounting a horse. Since the stirrup hadn't been invented yet (and wouldn't be until around 400 A.D.), this involved grasping the horse's mane in two places--up by the ears with the left hand and at the base of the neck with the right. The rider would then jump up while swinging his right leg over the horse's back (horses tended to be shorter in ancient times). Alternatively, if he was carrying a spear, the rider could use it to vault onto his charger. Xenophon advocates learning to mount from the right or "off" side in case the exigencies of war required it. It's plain from his detailed description that the left or "near" side of the horse was the correct side for mounting in Xenophon's time, when horses were primarily used for war.

Even when the stirrup came into use, the sheathed sword would still be in the way in mounting from the right, and would be likely to jab the horse in the side or rump just as the rider was swinging his leg over its back. The startled horse would then be strongly inclined to bolt, leaving the rider (briefly) in midair.

So why do we still mount from the left? After all, except for the occasional ceremony, the cavalry has ridden off into the sunset. To answer the question, we need to delve into equine physiology and psychology.

Let's start with a fundamental fact, essential to understanding equines: The horse isn't a predator--it's prey. Even after millennia of domestication, the horse is physically and mentally hardwired to detect and elude attackers. Its eyes are set on the sides of its head, giving it almost 360 degrees of vision. It sees two monocular fields at once, one through each eye. The binocular vision we human predators take for granted, the horse has in only a small area directly ahead of it. So what it "knows" on one side, it doesn't "know" on the other, until it's been shown. The horse's instincts dispose it to be suspicious of anything new in its environment. The thing behind that rock that wasn't there yesterday could be a lion!

What does this have to do with mounting from the left? It means that a horse who's been taught to accept being mounted only from one side may be perfectly docile when the rider clambers aboard on that side, yet spook and refuse to stand still if approached from the unfamiliar direction. That's why authorities on horse training (including our old friend Xenophon) recommend teaching horses to be mounted from the off side, so that they'll stand still for it if circumstances demand that the rider get on from that side

But why prefer the left side when swords are no longer a problem? Partly it's the inertia of tradition--horses and humans are both creatures of habit. But it's also common sense to have a standard approach. If you didn't know which side a particular horse had learned to be mounted from, you could get a nasty surprise if you tried to get on from the "wrong" side.

References:

The Art of Horsemanship, Xenophon (translated by Morris H. Led by HRH Tengku Mahkota Johor, Tengku Major Ismail Ibrahim, Royal Johor dominated the final against home club Royal Pahang Polo Club, winning 6 – 4 ½.
Both teams had fought their way to the final with 4 and 0 records, with Royal Johor racking up huge scores in their qualifying games.

RJPC 1 had defeated Kiara Polo 11-1, Ranhill-Dhanaz 11 – 3½, and Bunga Raya 10 – 2½ in group play. They then were drawn against RJPC 2 in the semi-finals, and easily defeated them 6 – 3.

Tengku Dato’ Uzir’s Royal Pahang Polo Club team were just as impressive in group play, beating RJPC 3 4 -2, Terengganu Polo Club 4 – 2½ and Apocalypse 9 – 5. Royal Pahang then defeated Santa Marissa 7 – 3 in their semi-final to set up a battle royal in the final against Royal Johor.

During the tournament RJPC 1 was rehandicapped as +4 team, taking them outside the Merdeka League handicap limit of +1. While they did not score any Merdeka League points, Royal Johor’s emphatic victory served to highlight what Malaysian polo has missed for the last twelve years as Royal Johor played only on their home field and abroad, but not in the rest of Malaysia’s tournaments.

His Majesty, the Sultan of Johor was in Pekan to watch the finals. Earlier, he watched his second son HRH Tengku Abdul Rahman’s RJPC 2 team easily defeat Santa Marissa 4 to 1½.

The final itself was a bit of an anticlimax. So much was expected of Royal Johor 1 that it was almost impossible to live up to. The rain which had forced the postponement from Saturday to Sunday meant that the going was yielding, with quite a lot of cut in the ground, making it difficult for Royal Pahang’s Amran Selamat and HRH Tengku Mahkota Johor to play their normal game of close control, with their normally excellent stickwork affected by the ground.

Royal Pahang received 2½ goals on handicap at the start of the match. HRH Tengku Mahkota Johor reduced the deficit with two penalty goals in the first chukka. RJPC 1 got their noses in front at the end of the second chukka as Amran gave away a simple tap-in penalty, which Tengku Mahkota Johor duly converted.

RJPC 1 drew away to a 5 – 2½ lead in the third chukka before Royal Pahang finally scored one. Amran added another in the final chukka before Tengku Mahkota Johor sealed a famous victory with an emphatically struck 30 yard penalty conversion.
RJPC1's Zubir (pictured above right in the black helmet with HRH Tengku Mahkota Johor in the blue helmet) was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament. His combination play and tough man-marking won him the recognition of his peers. It also enabled his patron, HRH Tengku Mahkota Johor to win the prize as the top-scorer of the tournament.

Royal Johor was triumphantly cheered by the many supporters who traveled to Pekan for the final. They hoisted HRH Tengku Mahkota Johor on their shoulders after the win over Royal Pahang Polo Club.

~ credit to www.equestrian.com.my

FOR SALE / ADOPTION: Prengnant Pony For Sale

As they could not afford to buy horses, Adnan bought more and now owns 15 horses valued at RM100,000.

Adnan has also taken on the responsibility of training youths in not only riding but also horseball.

(Horseball is a game which began in France in the 1970s. It can be described as a cross between polo and basketball, with hoops hung at right angles to the ground. Players score points by throwing a ball through the hoops).

Training sessions were previously held in the evenings at a field near his house with up to 20 youths attending each session.

"I didn’t want them to loiter around and be dragged into immoral activities. The President’s Bodyguard of India is in Malaysia for a special performance at the Malaysian Open Polo Tournament. The commanding officer Colonel Ali Adil Mehmood has sent his Second-in-charge Lt Colonel Sanjay Bhatia, with a squad of four troopers, to Putrajaya to perform at the Malaysian Open Polo Tournament.

These skilled horsemen won’t be playing polo, though they are all adept at it. Instead the PBG will be doing a trick riding performance. Their spectacular performance will include a standing salute, hanky-picking and tent-pegging.

Their version of tent-pegging isn’t the messy cavalry charge we are used to seeing in Malaysia. The PBG have to be far more precise as they lance the pegs from between the legs of an assistant standing over the pegs. And they tent-peg with lances, rapiers and stilletos.

Putrajaya is an excellent performance ground for them as the polo grounds have an excellent grandstand to seat spectators comfortably. The field itself is in perfect condition. It is Malaysia’s Palermo.

The polo at the Malaysian Open is fantastic. The quality of the teams is very good, and all matches are very competitive. This is a tournament really for spectators to enjoy polo and be entertained.

This weekend the President’s Bodyguard will make one performance each day, at approximately 4:30 pm on Saturday and at about 5:00 pm on Sunday. Don’t miss it.

Malaysia confident of polo gold in Sea Games

KUANTAN: Malaysia is confident of delivering the polo gold medal at the Korat Sea Games in Thailand in December.

Malaysia won the gold when polo made its debut in 1983 but the sport was dropped from subsequent Sea Games.

"Being the defending champions, Malaysia is determined to win the polo gold in Thailand in December,” said team manager Ahmad Jamili in Kuantan.

"The only time polo was included as a Sea Games event was in 1983. It told the story of how the Sultan’s Cup Challenge had been conceived and the challenge made to the rest of the world. The call has truly gone out to all corners of the world to find the best endurance horse and rider. With the 2008 World Endurance Championships set to be held in Terengganu, the best in the world are taking up the challenge from this November. Participants from sixteen countries will take part in this CEI 3-Star ride over 160 km. The riders and their horses are expected from Argentina, Australia, Bahrain, Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Qatar, UAE, USA and Malaysia. They will start to arrive in October and will have a month’s acclimatisation before the event on 9th to 11 November.

Twenty-five foreign participants and fifteen Malaysians are expected to take part in the 160 km event. The horses will arrive at KLIA on specially chartered and commercial flights and will be transported to Terengganu by the Royal Malaysian Air Force. The event serves as second trial for the FEI World Endurance Championships which will be held in November 2008. The FEI requires a completion rate of 40% at this event. The organisers realize that Malaysia is facing some international pressure to have the WEC2008 to be held in another country.
